This program offers a "portrait" of the oboist Josef Marx—musical thinker, musicologist, publisher, and oboist for whom three major works by Stefan Wolpe were written. Stefan Wolpe is at the center of the program, with other works selected to show the broad range of Josef Marx's musical voice. His thinking had a lasting influence on scores of younger players, instilling (among other principles) the imperative need for performers to seek out and champion the composers of our own time—as he did with Stefan Wolpe.
