A Special Tribute
The day after the death of Jean-Pierre Rampal, at the Ensemble Concert of the New York Flute Club, the Club's President, Patricia Spencer, opened the concert with the following

|
It is with a profound sense of loss that we mourn the death of a giant in the flute world. Jean-Pierre Rampal inspired literally millions of listeners, and inspired and taught literally thousands of flutists, who in turn are teaching and inspiring thousands more. In the weeks and months to come, we will read many accounts and memories and analyses of Rampal's importance in our field. The New York Flute Club will be planning an event next season commemorating his legacy and expressing our gratitude for his generosity to the Club -- including his appearance as the guest artist at our very first Flute Fair in 1994.
A friend of Rampal's once observed that, if you loved the flute, he loved you. I invite all of us to extend that warmth to each other, to our colleagues and students, as a continuation of the joy he brought to music and to us. |
