Biographies

For over thirty years, The New York New Music Ensemble has commissioned, performed, recorded, taught, and fiercely advocated the music of our time. Described as "pulsating with life and timbral excitement," (Los Angeles Times) the group is sought out by composers and audiences wishing thoughtful and passionate performances. The Ensemble's interests span music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, 'classics', emerging composers, and music involving extended instrumental and electronic techniques, theatre, interactive and live electronics, and graphics.

NYNME has concertized across the country and in Europe, South America, China, Japan and Hawaii. Past university residencies include Brandeis University, Emory University, Rice University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and the June in Buffalo Festival (twelve times). The group has released twenty-one recordings to date, among which are Music of Arthur Kreiger (Albany Records: TROY609), Music of Wayne Peterson (Koch International: 37498-2HI); New Electro-Acoustic Music: Primosch, Rulon, Steiger (Centaur CD: 2338); Music of Carter, Davies and Druckman (GM Recordings: GM2047CD); and Schoenberg's Pierrot lunaire (GM Recordings: GM2030CD).

Since the Ensemble's ambitious, five-year commissioning commitment began in 2005-06, the Ensemble has received new works from: Eleanor Cory, Richard Festinger, Eric Moe, Mario Pelusi, James Primosch, Stephen Ricks, Morris Rosenzweig, and Rolv Yttrehus. The 2007-08 season continues with new works written for NYNME by: Ross Bauer, Maxwell Dulaney, David Glaser, Philippe Hurel, Dina Koston, and Morris Rosenzweig.

NYNME's 2007-08 New York City Series will take place at Miller Theatre, Columbia University on Monday, November 12th; and Merkin Concert Hall on Monday, February 25 and Monday, April 14, 2008.

Daniel Druckman

Percussionist Daniel Druckman is active as a soloist, chamber and orchestra musician, and recording artist. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, and has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the American Composers Orchestra. He has recorded for Columbia, Angel, DGG, CRI, Nonesuch, and New World Records, and is a member of the New York Philharmonic.

Christopher Finckel

Christopher Finckel, born into a family of cellists, began his studies with his father George Finckel and is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Mischa Schneider and Orlando Cole. Currently he is a member of the Manhattan String Quartet. He has concertized in the Far East, Australia, Europe, Central America and throughout the United States and Canada. A frequent guest artist with such acclaimed ensembles as the Tokyo String Quartet, the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble and Speculum Musicae, Mr. Finckel has appeared at the Casals, Santa Fe, Ravinia, Madeira Bach and Norfolk Chamber Music Festivals, and is a founding member of the North Country Chamber Players of New Hampshire.

Stephen Gosling

Pianist Stephen Gosling's playing has been hailed as "electric" and "luminous and poised" (New York Times), and possessing "utter clarity and conviction" (Washington Post) and "extraordinary virtuosity" (Houston Chronicle). A native of Sheffield, England, Mr. Gosling moved to New York in 1989 to study with Oxana Yablonskaya at the Juilliard School, where he earned his Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees. During his time at Juilliard he was awarded the Mennin Prize for Outstanding Excellence and Leadership in Music and the Sony Elevated Standards Fellowship. He was also featured as concerto soloist an unprecendented four times. Energetically committed to the music of our time, Mr. Gosling has been a member of the New York New Music Ensemble since 1999. He is also a member of Ensemble Sospeso, Columbia University's Sinfonietta Moderna, and Ne(x)tworks, a group dedicated to the realization of aleatory scores. He is additionally a frequent guest artist of many other groups, including Orpheus, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Continuum, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, Speculum Musicae, Ensemble 21, DaCapo Chamber Players, Continuum, SEM Ensemble, the League of Composers/ISCM Chamber Players, and Da Camera of Houston. He has also played in Off-Broadway productions and collaborated with several dance companies.

Mr. Gosling is a prolific recording artist, and may be heard on New World Records, Bridge, CRI, Mode, Innova, Albany, Centaur, Morrison Music Trust and Rattle Records.usic Mobile, Absolute Ensemble, the New Juilliard Ensemble, Da Camera of Houston, and Bang on a Can. He has recorded for Decca, Altarus, Rattle Records (New Zealand) and New World Records.

Jean Kopperud

"The American clarinetist Jean Kopperud was absolutely smashing" (New York Post). A graduate of The Juilliard School and former student of Nadia Boulanger in France, Kopperud has toured the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, China, the Caribbean and Australia as concert soloist and chamber musician. Presently she is performing with The New York New Music Ensemble, Omega, the ISCM Ensemble, Ensemble 21, and Washington Square Chamber Players. She has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, Bridge Records, G M Recording, Koch, Musical Heritage and Centaur records.

Kopperud is also a performer on the cutting edge of the Music-Theater genre. National acclaim for her presentations of Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Harlekin", the demanding performance work for dancing clarinetist, resulted in her Avery Fisher Hall debut presented by the New York Philharmonic.

Each holiday season she takes part in the Twelfth Night Festival in Westerly, Rhode Island where she is seen starring in unusual performance art roles. Working with Broadway director, Tom O'Horgan, Jean Kopperud developed "CloudWalking" a music-theater work that previewed at ClarFest in 1988 and toured for three years. "Cloud Walking" is a reference to Kopperud's passion for skydiving. She has found a way to include even that in her show, which amuses and amazes audiences with her very special combination of musical and athletic abilities.

Currently Ms. Kopperud is on the faculty of SUNY Buffalo and the Juilliard School. (formerly on the New York University and Columbia faculties.) At Juilliard she teaches a class called "On the Edge" in the Evening Division as well as private and class clarinet in the Music Advancement Program. "On the Edge" is a course to practice performing that is also done in workshop around the country.

Jeffrey Milarsky

Jeffrey Milarsky is the leading conductor of contemporary music in New York City. In the United States and abroad, he has premiered and recorded works by contemporary composers, including Charles Wuorinen, Fred Lerdahl, Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, Lasse Thoresen, Gerard Grisey, Jonathan Dawe, Tristan Murail, Ralph Shapey, Luigi Nono, Mario Davidovsky and Wolfgang Rihm. His wide ranging repertoire, which spans from Bach to Xenakis, has brought him to lead such accomplished groups as the American Composers Orchestra, the New York New Music Ensemble, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Columbia Sinfonietta, Speculum Musicae, Cygnus Ensemble, The Fromm Players at Harvard University, The Composers' Ensemble at Princeton University, and the New York Philharmonic chamber music series. Most recently, he has joined the faculty of The Manhattan School of Music as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Percussion Ensemble. In addition, he has been a regular guest conductor of the Stonybrook University Orchestra.

A much-in-demand percussionist who has performed and recorded with the New York Philharmonic among many ensembles, Mr. Milarsky is Professor in Music at Columbia University, where he is the Music Director/Conductor of the Columbia University Orchestra. Also at Columbia University, Mr. Milarsky is Music Director and Conductor of the Manhattan Sinfonietta in residence at Columbia University, which will concentrate on 20th and 21st century scores. This ensemble, one of the United States' finest instrumental groups, will perform, tour and record throughout the United States.

Mr. Milarsky received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Peter Mennin Prize for outstanding leadership and achievement in the arts. He regularly conducts The Juilliard Orchestra, with whom he has premiered over 150 works of Juilliard student composers over the past fifteen years. He is also on the Pre-College Percussion Faculty at Juilliard, and has been, until recently, Director of the Composition Forum.

As an active chamber and orchestral musician, Mr. Milarsky performs and records regularly with The New York Philharmonic, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, The American Composers Orchestra, The Stamford Symphony and Concordia. He has recorded extensively for Angel, Bridge, Teldec, Telarc, New World, CRI, MusicMasters, EMI, Koch, and London records.

Linda Quan

Linda Quan has had a diverse career concertizing and recording in the United States, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In the new music field, she has most recently performed and recorded with the New York New Music Ensemble, the Atlantic Quartet, and the ISCM Chamber Ensemble. In addition to her position on the faculty of Vassar College since 1980, her activities in the "period instrument' field have included the Aulos Ensemble, the Handel and Haydn Society, the American Classical Orchestra, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, and the Bach Ensemble. She has recorded on the Harmonia Mundi, Smithsonian, CRI, Musical Heritage Society, MusicMasters, Opus One, and Decca (L'Oiseau-Lyre) labels. Presently residing in New City, New York, Ms. Quan lives with her husband, oboist Marc Schachman, their children Toby and Nikki, and their Akita dog, Moho.

Jayn Rosenfeld

Jayn Rosenfeld, a graduate of Radcliffe College and the Manhattan School of Music, studied flute with James Pappoutsakis, William Kincaid and Marcel Moyse. She was principal flutist in the American Symphony Orchestra when it was conducted by Leopold Stokowski and won a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant in 1986. Her many recordings include concerti by Cimarosa ,Steiger, Kraft and Constantinides, solo works by Ruth Crawford Seeger, Leon Kirchner, John Anthony Lennon and Robert Erickson, and many chamber works on Bridge, CRI, Opus One, GM, Musical Heritage, Columbia and Centaur Records. Flutist and executive director of the New York New Music Ensemble, Ms. Rosenfeld also plays with the ISCM Ensemble, the Richardson Players at Princeton University, the Washington Square Chamber Players, and is first flutist of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Rosenfeld teaches at the Juilliard School in the Music Advancement Program, and at Princeton University.
