What is a TSD Rally?

In a Time-Speed-Distance Rally, teams of two (driver and navigator) work together to follow route instructions and in some cases, complete puzzles or answer questions along the way at designated checkpoints. Speed are always legal, and often are below the posted speed limit. A TSD rally is a competition of precision driving: it is NOT a race.

The goal of a rally team is twofold: to stay on the prescribed course, and to dirve at exactly the given speed. The perfect team would be on course and on time at any given point along the route. To score teams against this goal, checkpoints are sprinkled throughout the course. Each team receives a score based on its time for that portion, or leg, of the course. For each fraction of a minute early or late, the team is given points. The team with the lowest total score for all the legs wins. Each leg is independant: time late or early on one leg can not be “made up” on subsequent legs.

Gimmick Rally

A gimmick rally is not socored on any speed factor, but on some special gimmick rule defined by the organizers. This is perhaps similar to a scavenger hunt. You are generally scored based on information you find on the course. This may be from signs, advertising, or even the number of cows. There are several variations on gimmick rallies. There is the shortest distance rally, where a team tries to visit a given number of locations while traveling the least number of miles. There is the hare and hounds rally where the lead car goes out and drops a flour bag or other marker before each intersection and a gain after making the turn. Again, lowest mileage usually wins. There are pie plate rallies where the rally master places pie plates on stakes along the intended route. Some pie plates have information for scoring, and others have information for course following.

Cruises, Poker Runs and Charity Events (MINI Motoring Hearts)

What could be better than a herd of fifty MINIs driving along Winnipeg and Manitoba streets? A summer and/or fall MINI cruise is in the works! The cruise will start at a pre-determinied point for refreshments in the morning, and will be a short cruise to a landmark, restaurant or Manitoba town for lunch and/or games! Along the way drivers may participate in a “poker run” for a chance at prizes. All money collected goes for charity.

Track events (Woo Hoo!)

Birchwood MINI has generously offered to arrange for a track day for us with our MINIs! This event would be like an autocross or solo II event where drivers put the skills to the test on a track mapped with pylons. Because drivers are released one at a time on the track, the event is perfect for both new and experienced track drivers. We will also report events open to all drivers through the Winnipeg Sports Car Club (WSCC). Our newsletter will include an event listing with associated costs, locations, how to get involved, etc.
